Frecciarossa

The Red Arrow has been fired! Milan–Rome (640 km) in 3 hours 30 minutes non stop (or 3 hours 59 minutes including Bologna and Florence)! Travel in style: sockets to plug in your computer, newspapers, drinks, restaurant carriage and even a cleaner! This is the new alta velocità service launched by Trenitalia this week (13 December).
But at what price? Tickets cost €98 First Class or €71 Second Class (one way). However these prices increase to €109 and €79 respectively from 14 January. When you arrive at your destination it is even possible to rent a car with chauffeur (4 hours for €35).
Other destinations available:
- Milan–Bologna: 1h 05
- Milan–Florence: 2h 10
- Naples–Florence: 3h 13
- Naples–Bologna: 3h 43
- Roma–Naples: 1h 21

For those of you who know the Italian rail system all this may sound too good to be true. Well, you could be right. Already on the first Monday of the new service there were major delays – caused by commuters protesting! Maybe the train should be renamed the Frecciarotta (broken arrow). Let’s hope the service goes well though. But don’t hold your breath. If you want good high speed rail travel then go to Japan.
Info
There is also an information centre in Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Milan (near Piazza Duomo).

Very good times and I look forward to travelling on this great train. By comparison a trip on the Japanese Bullet Train from Himeji to Tokyo (644km) takes 3hours 9 minutes which includes 6 stops on the journey. However the standard fare is 120 euro (or 165 euro 1st class). Quite a bit more expensive! Well done Trenitalia.
