Fabrizio De André
Written by admin on 12 January, 2009 – 12:23 pm -Over the last few months I have discovered some wonderful Italian singer-songwriters / musicians. Using this blog I would like to share some of them with you. Maybe you will like some of my recommendations, maybe not, as taste is a very personal thing, but if nothing else you will be introduced to some of the most important figures in Italian music.
Yesterday, Sunday 11th January, marked ten years since the death of Fabrizio De André, an Italian singer-songwriter and poet. The cultural television programme che tempo che fa hosted a special evening, along with his wife, in his honour. The lineup of singers performing his songs included Gianna Nannini, Lucio Dalla, Franco Battiato, Jovanotti, Tiziano Ferro and Cristiano De André (the son).
It was the first time I had heard many of these songs – maybe they should be described as poems such was their hold over me. Hopefully this clip of the song Geordie (performed by Fabrizio De André) will better demonstrate.

Hi Mike, I’m so glad that also non-Italians can appreciate the wonderful musical and poetic genius that De Andre’ was. Unfortunately I missed the TV programme last Sunday but I’m sure it was great. ‘Geordie’ is my favourite song. I think in this video he’s singing together with his daughter Luvi. All the best. Ciao. Antonella

@Antonella - thanks for visiting my blog. You will probably find some clips from last Sunday’s TV programme on Youtube so check it out.
There are so many great Italian musicians - in England they are not really appreciated or known (as the English generally don’t listen to foreign music). In the next few months I will write about some of my favourite Italian singers / composers, newly discovered, such as Lucio Battisti, Franco Battiato, Francesco De Gregori, Giovanni Allevi, Elisa etc. If you can recommend others that would be good too and I’ll check them out.
Thanks for the info on the Geordie video. It is a beautiful song.
Hope you continue to enjoy the blog. Ciao. Mike

I’ve never been overwhelmed by Italian singers. I love jazz and some kind of humour you rarely find in Italian variety, except for Paolo Conte…
Ciao until the next !

I have started to appreciate jazz (there is a big festival in Moncalieri, near Turin, each year) and I am finding some Italian music very good, pity you don’t enjoy it so much. I haven’t listen to any Paolo Conte yet but I know he is from Asti and also an artist.

Hi Mike, G@attoGiallo is right about Paolo Conte. He’s very good and very “subtle”. You should listen to him and you will surely like his music and style. I come from a small town near Asti and if you can go to Asti at the weekend you can sometimes spot him around town. I used to like Angelo Branduardi but he hasn’t written any new music for ages, but his old music is rather peculiar, inspired to old medioeval ballads…Have a nice weekend. Ciao. Antonella

@Antonella – I will have to listen to Paolo Conte. My wife also says he’s very good. I’m not far from Asti and it’s a town I love. He’s a good artist too. I will look out for Angelo Branduardi too. Thanks for the suggestions. Buon weekend. Ciao. Mike
