Sweet Little Lies
Written by admin on 28 January, 2009 – 9:30 am -
These are Bugie which literally means lies. They are a typical biscuit / sweet snack available during the carnival period (i.e. before Lent).
I tell a lie. They are not called Bugie. Well in Piedmont they are. Their name depends on the region or even town: frappe (Central Italy), cenci (Tuscany), chiacchiere (Sicily, Campania, Lazio, Sardinia, Lombardy, Umbria, Apulia, Calabria), cròstoli (Veneto, Trentino Alto Adige, Friuli Venezia Giulia), galàni (Venice, Padua), intrigoni, lasagne, lattughe, pampuglie, rosoni, sfrappole (Bologna, Modena, Romagna), cioffe (Abruzzo), or sfrappe (Marche)! Most Italians do not know their different names.
These little delights can be vuote (empty), as in the photo, or ripiene (stuffed) with various fillings. My wife is addicted to them and I am getting hooked too.
If you are thinking of trying them for yourself be careful. Prices range from €16 – €41.50 per kilogram depending on where you buy them (at least that’s the range I have seen)!!! Price does not necessarily guarantee quality.

If you are interested in making this speciality then http://cakeitaly.com has a recipe. Please let me know how you get on if you do have a go.

Speaking about sweeties… I wonder if you can find in Torino “meringhe alla panna” as good as they were in Biella. In Paris you can just find “méringues” at the baker, but they aren’t as soft and French whipped cream, the “chantilly cream” is too sweet… in short, I miss the original !

Che buone le bugie!!! In Piazza Carignano there used to be “Peppino” with its wonderful meringhe alla panna and ice-creams. I don’t know if it’s still there. Apparently it was Peppino who “invented” the famous gelato pinguino, chocolate covered with hazelnuts. Ciao. Antonella

I had a delicious “meringhe alla panna” from Ghigo’s pasticceria (Via Po, Turin). In fact anything with ‘panna’ is fine with me, especially a cappuccino.
Peppino does a great ‘cioccolata calda con panna’ - a little pricey but one has to treat oneself occasionally.

They look delicious. We shall have to sample some on our next trip to Torino. With our weak pound I hope we shall still be able to afford a few grams.
