Word of the Week
Written by admin on 1 February, 2009 – 3:41 pm -
I have lived in Italy for over 3 years now but last week was the first time I heard this word used in conversation.
pan di Spagna m.
sponge cake
Unfortunately this type of cake is not very common here. How I crave it! I wonder which dishes Italians living abroad miss most?

Dear Mike, thank you for your e-mail. We are in a hurry right now, so we just had a quick peek at your blog. We’ll definitely be back later on. How is that you can’t find Pan di Spagna in Turin? It’s a very common cake, so you probably did not find the right “pasticceria”.
About the dishes that Italians miss when they are living abroad, we can say that pizza and mozzarella di bufala are what we miss the most. Then we could make a long list of other things (pastries, cheeses, a good cup of espresso…) that we are not able to find here, but we can live without them.
Cheers from Scotland!

@Kia and Zeno - now I shall look out for this Pan di Spagna. Maybe it is just that the Italians I am with don’t eat it so often. Now I am more aware I will probably see it everywhere! I will definitely buy it.
Mozzarella di bufala is one of my favourites too. However, occasionally a haggis is not so bad! Or maybe a nice ‘Fish Supper’.
