to fail, to turn down, to reject

  • bocciare una proposta di legge – to reject a (parliamentary) bill
  • mi hanno bocciato in fisica – I failed physics
  • è stato bocciato – he failed (eg to fail the school year)

    “Bocciare” can also mean: to hit a car with one’s car. Or, as a sport expression (gioco delle bocce), it means to hit the challenger’s bowl (boccia) with one’s bowl, in order to get it out of the game.
