Santa Maria Nuova

The 2009 Palio di Asti was won by Santa Maria Nuova. It is the fifth time in the history of the event that they have been victorious (they recently had back-to-back wins in 2005 and 2006). Tele Cupole, Piedmont’s regional television channel, showed the event live but had to leave before the climax as there were too many false starts (at least three)!
As the weather on Sunday was unpredictable I only decided to travel to Asti at the last minute. The medieval parade, which sees the competing Rioni arrive at the piazza, was as splendid as ever. To view the highlights click on the thumbnails below.
Almost as soon as the parade was over it started to rain. I headed towards the Palazzo del Comune where there was a free exhibition celebrating the Palio. Whilst there I managed to pick up a souvenir programme of this years event. If anybody is interested in having a printed copy I will gladly send it to them. Just send me an email and let me know. This is the first giveaway I have done on the Cappuccino Experience. Hopefully more will follow.
If anyone reading this is from the Santa Maria Nuova rione then you now have my permission to celebrate for the whole year!
