Pranzo di ferragosto
Written by admin on 18 July, 2011 – 10:25 pm -One film that I definitely recommend for summer viewing is Pranzo di ferragosto (mid-August lunch). Ferragosto is a special day in the Italian calendar and this film sums it up beautifully. I saw it two years ago and it came as an unexpected treat.
The protagonist of the film, Gianni Di Gregorio, has written and stars in a new film The Salt of Life (recommended by the Guardian), out in the UK on 12 August.

Lord of the Rings – Unseen Footage
Written by admin on 19 March, 2011 – 5:05 pm -
To coincide with the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy, previously unseen footage has been released from “The Fellowship of the Ring”, the first in Tolkien’s trilogy of films about Middle-earth. This entirely Piedmontese version was shot in 1860. Unfortunately the project had to be abandoned due to the events that occurred in 1861 and when filming resumed it was decided to use the more widespread Italian language.

Totò

Or rather Antonio Focas Flavio Angelo Ducas Comneno De Curtis di Bisanzio Gagliardi (1898-1967). The undisputed king of Italian comedy in the opinion of most Italians (an opinion I also share). Very physical and intelligent, his comedy has stood the test of time. His films are regularly shown on television here and DVD collections of his best work are constantly released.

I Have No Dream
Written by admin on 9 January, 2011 – 7:18 pm -Taking on the role of one of Italy’s most controversial and flamboyant politicians, Cetto la Qualunque, Antonio Albanese gives us a peek into the murky world of politics in this not to be missed film.

Among Mr. La Qualunque’s most popular slogans are:
- Prima voti! Poi rifletti! (First vote! Then reflect!)
- Basta con la disoccupazione! Basta col carovita! Basta con la giustizia! (No more unemployment! No more costly living! No more Law!)
- I have no dream.

Ale e Franz
These two comedians, just like Ficarre & Picone from a few weeks ago, compliment each other perfectly. They regularly performed on the popular Italian variety show Zelig, were stars of the improvisation series Buona la prima! (the first take is good enough), and now have a new programme – Ale e Franz Sketch Show. Well worth looking into. Some of their humour is very English.
